I wanted to let you all know about Bike to Work Day, which will take place on Friday, May 16th. This is an event of the League of American Bicyclists, which has been in existence since 1956, but the local version was inspired by a few people from the Finger Lakes Cycling Club and the Curb Your Car Coalition, who “decided the time was ripe for a big Bike To Work Day event here, so we began advertising to see what kind of turnout we can get.” You can find about more, including some defined routes that groups of folks are going to take, at http://icycle.org/biketowork/ I recently voted to finance two inaugural routes of the City’s “Bicycle Plan”, which has been sitting on the books unfunded for years. If we’re going to have a truly high quality of life in our neighborhoods, then investing in this underserved mode of transportation and providing more choices for commuters that reduce pollution, increase personal health and are kind to our infrastructure will be crucial. I will be walking to work, my preferred mode of transportation, in support of all of you participating tomorrow, and offer a friendly wave whenever I see you!

Bike plans etc. are all well and good but I have to wonder what are you and the common council going to do about the drug dealers in Ithaca… a lot of it is going on just two blocks from your house in either direction (Plain street and the west end of the commons)… no one on the common council ever talks about this issue, you all talk about wood smoke and biking to work and KYOTO and college students drinking beer, meanwhile there are people selling drugs in the open and everyone knows it but nobody does anything about it.

It is the height of hypocrisy to bring a smoking ban to the commons while people are selling illegal drugs (and legal drug paraphernalia ) on the commons.

hint: look up, shoes over telephone lines are a signal that drugs are for sale in this town.

You know once Meth hits Ithaca we are toast, you know that don’t you? Binghamton is already dealing with it, we are next.
